History of Salina

  • 4th Millennium BCE (Neolithic Era): Early human settlements emerged, driven by the island's fertile volcanic soil and fresh water springs, which made Salina an agricultural hub compared to neighboring islands.
  • 4th–3rd Century BCE (Hellenistic Period): Greeks settled near Santa Marina, establishing agricultural trade and utilizing the island’s natural salt pan (*salina*) at Lingua, which gave the island its modern name.
  • 1st Century BCE – 4th Century CE (Roman Era): Salina flourished under Roman rule as a commercial center for sea salt production, Malvasia wine manufacturing, and maritime trade routes in the Tyrrhenian Sea.
  • 1560s (Arab Pirate Raids & Depopulation): Frequent devastation by Ottoman corsairs, including Barbarossa, temporarily forced inhabitants to abandon coastal villages for safer inland refuges like Valdichiesa.
  • 1867 (Autonomy & Emigration Era): Salina separated administratively from Lipari. Soon after, the late 19th-century phylloxera epidemic devastated local vineyards, triggering mass emigration to Australia and the Americas.
